A Guide To Thread Vein Removal

12th December 2020

Our highly-trained dermatologists are experts in all things skin – and one of those is the dreaded thread vein. If you’re living with thread veins and all the discomfort they bring (whether in pain or appearance), rest assured we can help.

In this post, our Manchester dermatologists will give a general guide to thread veins, as well as outline our thread vein removal treatment. We’ll then share how to book a consultation with us, to kickstart the procedure.

A word of warning

Before we begin, it’s worth knowing that thread vein treatment and a thread lift are two completely different things. We’re focusing on thread veins in this post (those spidery, red or purple-looking veins which form just below the surface of the skin), not a thread lift (which is a non-surgical alternative to a face lift). However, we do offer both of these procedures at our IPL laser clinic.

How do thread veins form?

These web-like areas form after the underlying valves in the veins are damaged (such as from pressure, or even from the sun). Essentially, blood pools in the vein, causing the tell-tale ‘branched out’ appearance.

What causes thread veins to appear?

As with many things in life, genetics plays a part. However, it’s possible that weight gain and pregnancy have contributed, and of course, sitting and standing for long periods can be a cause. Sun damage is also linked to the problem, as spider veins on the face can be a result of UV rays damaging the delicate skin.

What about thread vein removal?

Our recommended thread vein removal treatment is laser therapy, which can target smaller veins that are close to the skin. Our IPL laser clinic carries out this procedure on a regular basis, and you can trust in the care and experience of our experts. Laser therapy is a minimally-invasive procedure, where the beam of the laser helps the vein to ‘clot and dry up’, which in turn helps the appearance of the vein to fade away.

What else can I try?

Compression stockings are widely available and may help prevent further thread veins forming. However, they won’t typically affect existing thread veins.

How can I prevent thread veins from forming?

There’s lots you can do:

Always wear sun protection – this is something our dermatologists advise, regardless of your concern.

Keep fit and eat well – being at a healthy weight, and having an active lifestyle, can make thread vein formation less likely. This is because there’s less pressure on the veins and circulation is improved.

Avoid heat treatments – these can cause beings to swell, particularly in the legs.

Elevate your legs where possible – this prevents blood ‘pooling’.

Watch your alcohol intake – excessive drinking can cause broken blood vessels and a flushed appearance.
