Do I need to start taking Spironolactone?

3rd November 2023

Spironolactone is a strong and effective medication that can be used for many medical-related issues but isn’t suitable for everyone. Odds are, if you’re reading this blog, it’s because you’re doing your research before booking a consultation or starting your treatment – so well done, first off, for being a conscientious patient. Let’s start…

Let’s take a look at Spironolactone as a medication so you can decipher whether it’s something you fancy starting.

What is Spironolactone?

Spironolactone is a medication that is typically recommended to people who have cardiac difficulties, high blood pressure, or fluid retention. It may have additional hormonal effects by inhibiting the function of androgens, or “male hormones”, generally generated in low amounts by women.

How does it work?

Some patients have elevated androgen levels or higher sensitivity to normal androgen levels, which can result in skin diseases. Spironolactone can thus be used to treat these disorders.

Typically, what does Spironolactone treat?

Spironolactone is a prescription medication used to treat acne, female pattern hair loss, and hirsutism (male pattern hair growth in women). “Off licence” indicates that it is not clearly stated in the prescription licence for specific situations. It is also used to treat polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). It is not commonly prescribed to male patients to address skin disorders.

Will my skin issues be cured forever after taking Spironolactone?

Spironolactone is not a cure, although it can help manage and sometimes remove acne. It can assist women with some types of hair loss, eliminate extra facial and body hair, and enhance the density of scalp hair. The treatment takes several months to work.

What is the usual dosage, and how should I take it?

The standard daily dosage for skin issues is 50-150mg daily. For various medical problems, higher doses are prescribed. Your doctor will tell you how much to take. As with most medications, Spironolactone tablets are best taken with a glass of water after eating.

How long after starting this medication will I begin to see the effects?

Most patients find that their acne improves after about three months of treatment. Hair complaints take longer, and treatment usually needs to be continued for up to six months before the benefit can be seen.
