How Does Laser Resurfacing Work?

3rd January 2021

As a skin clinic, our dermatologists here in Manchester work hard on your skin to create results you’ll love, helping you look (and feel) both healthy and youthful. One of our treatments, laser resurfacing, targets a whole host of concerns to help pause ageing and address skin damage. In this post, we’ll detail how the procedure works and what you can expect from treatment with our dermatologists.

So, how does it work?

Although laser resurfacing treatment uses lasers, it isn’t the invasive procedure you might expect. Depending on your concern, you might have ablative lasers to treat problems such as scarring or wrinkles, or non-ablative lasers to target superficial problems.

Your skin will be cleansed first, then the laser will slowly target the skin. The process ‘heats’ the skin, which can help promote new collagen fibres, which create a firmer, smoother appearance. Afterwards, a dressing may be used to help protect the skin, and sun protection must also be used.

What can it target?

There are lots of different areas our laser resurfacing can target. These include:

Signs of ageing: such as age spots, lines and wrinkles, and sagging skin
Skin damage: including acne scarring and general scars
Other concerns: ranging from uneven tone, to oiliness, to problems like warts

Who can carry out the procedure?

Laser resurfacing should only performed by a dermatologist or doctor. As with many medical and aesthetics procedures, it’s important to seek a reputable skin clinic in order to ensure any treatment you undertake is both safe and successful.

Can darker skin types use lasers?

Yes, many work on darker skin types too. The first step of the journey is a consultation, so we can better advise you on your options during this stage.

What are the risks and side-effects?

Aside from mild stinging and sensitivity, most people don’t experience any adverse reactions. However, it’s possible to develop swelling or a rash, and in rare cases, hyperpigmentation and scarring could occur. Having a consultation as the first step of your journey can help minimise these risks. The skin will gradually heal over a period of several days, but it’s good to know that there’s no downtime expected from the procedure.

What else do I need to know?

Our dermatologists recommend that you avoid smoking before any laser resurfacing procedure – or quit altogether. Not only can smoking inhibit healing, but it can also increase your risk of developing side-effects.
