PRP: Fact Or Fiction?

29th August 2020

PRP therapy uses your own blood to help aid healing and also has anti-ageing properties. It works by taking a blood sample, separating out the plasma, and then re-injecting it into strategic sites to stimulate growth and encourage healing. Here, we separate the fact from the fiction, so you know what’s involved with this popular therapy.

Fiction: PRP is a beauty treatment

There are lots of applications for PRP, from helping to boost hair growth and thickness, to easing muscle and joint pain, to increasing collagen production for firmer skin. It’s not simply a beauty or aesthetic procedure.

Fact: the process is simple and easy

As a busy skin clinic, we understand how precious your time is – and we know you want to have results as quickly as possible, too. With PRP, the therapy uses a number of steps:

Sample – first, some blood is extracted from the body to form a sample. The amount needed is related to the site where you’ll have the injections.

Separation – a special machine spins the blood to separate the precious plasma from the other components. Plasma is used because of its protein-rich composition,

Treatment – the plasma is then injected into the areas required. A numbing agent may be used to ease any discomfort.

Fiction: it’s unsafe to use

Because the plasma comes from your own blood, it’s extremely unlikely you’ll experience any adverse effects, from PRP therapy, such as rejection or allergic reactions. The treatment is also delivered in a safe, clinical setting and carried out by experts in the field, helping to minimise risks and complications. However, there is a very small chance there could be pain or infection following the PRP procedure.

Fact: the results timeframe varies

As there are so many applications for PRP, and everyone’s healing time is different, there’s no single estimate for when you can expect to see results. However, with a treatment course, and over the course of a few weeks, you should notice a discernible difference – such as new hair growth or faster healing in the treated area.

Fiction: PRP is a new treatment

Because it’s increasing in popularity all the time, it may be the first time you’ve heard about PRP therapy. However, it’s been used in blood transfusions for decades.  For the purposes outlined in this post, it’s been used for around 50 years.
