Face Slimming

with muscle relaxing injections

We offer two main treatments which can be used in combination to slim your face:
  1. Muscle-relaxing injections – which are commonly used for anti-wrinkle treatments, to reduce muscle bulk on the lower face (masseter muscles – the muscles that grind the teeth)
  2. ULTRAcel Q+ – using High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) technology to improve contour and tighten the skin on the lower face
HOW IT WORKS

Muscle-relaxing (anti-wrinkle) injections, when placed carefully into the masseter muscles (the muscles that grind the teeth) can reduce the muscle size over time. This results in a slimmer appearance of the lower face. These injections work by blocking the nerve signals responsible for activating your muscles. When injected on a regular basis, over time this can result in a smaller muscle, and subsequently a slimmer, and more contoured look to your face.

Ultracel Q plus uses the advanced HIFU technology to tighten and firm the skin. It also has the additional function of reducing fat in the lower face if required. By having columns of heat targeted to certain levels of the skin and fat, it can help to stimulate collagen synthesis which in turns tighten and firm the skin. For those who want additional fat loss, we can change the probe of the machine, and tailor the treatment to induce fat loss on the lower face.

Some patients require a combination of both treatments to achieve the desired effect, whilst others only need one of the treatments. To find out which treatments are best suited for you, we recommend a consultation with our Consultant Dermatologist, Dr Nicole who can discuss the pros and cons of each treatment, and whether these treatments are suitable for you.

PRECAUTIONS

It is NOT advisable to have the treatment if you have the following:

•An active infection at the site of treatment

•A neuromuscular disorder

•Younger than 18 years old

•Pregnant or breast-‐feeding

•A swallowing disorder

•Breathing difficulties

WHAT TO EXPECT

A topical anaesthetic cream is usually not required prior to the treatment. However, if you prefer, you can request for a topical anesthetic cream to be applied about 20 minutes prior to your treatment.

For muscle-relaxing injections, a very fine needle is used to inject tiny amounts of the slimming injections into the masseter muscles under the skin.

After treatment, some patients may experience warmth on the treated areas for 2-3 hours. The skin can look red and swollen for a few hours, rarely lasting for 1-2 days, or longer. Minor bruising can occur and if this happens, it can take 2-3 weeks to settle. After a minimum of 2 hours, you can apply make-up on the treated area.

PROPOSED TREATMENT COURSE

With muscle-relaxing injections, we recommend 3-4 treatments sessions per year to maintain the best result. Face Slimming injections at more frequent injection intervals or at higher doses may lead to antibody formation and treatment resistance, causing treatments to become less effective over time.

With the Ultracel Q plus treatments, in general, we recommend about 2 treatments in general, 3 months apart.

RESULTS

Results can vary among individuals, but in general, you tend to see results after at least 2 treatment sessions. Muscle size reduction occurs gradually over many months and years of regular injections.

Frequently Asked Questions

About Face Slimming Treatments at Lumiere Clinic

  1. What are face slimming injections?

Face slimming injections are treatments using a chemical substance which temporarily relaxes the muscle, causing the muscle to reduce in size over time. If carried out regularly, this will reduce the bulk of the masseter muscles in your lower face.

  2. How do face slimming injections work?

Face slimming injections temporarily block the release of acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is a chemical substance that is released from nerve endings. It transmits signals to the muscle and causes the muscle to contract. By blocking the release of acetylcholine, the muscle is not able to contract fully. As the muscles becomes less active, it reduces in size over time. Over a few months, the muscles form new receptors and start to contract again. Therefore it is important to ensure that these treatments are done regularly before the effect wears off.

  3. Are face slimming injections safe?

The treatment uses the same product used with anti-wrinkle injections and this has been used for various medical reasons such as to treat muscle spasms since the 1980s. Treatments are safe if they are delivered by a trained, qualified practitioner.

  4. When will I see an effect?

Face slimming injections usually take 2 weeks to take effect, however the reduction of muscle bulk happens gradually over many months/years if regular treatments are maintained.

For ULTRAcel Q+, you may notice your skin is smoother and tighter immediately after the treatment, however the full result will take place over the following 6 months as new collagen is produced. For fat reduction treatments, you may notice an immediate contouring effect, but the full effects will continue to improve over the following 6 months.

  5. How long do the effects last for?

The effect of facial slimming injections on the muscle can last from 2 to 6 months. In the average patient, it works for 3 to 4 months before muscle contractility increases again. It is therefore important to maintain regular treatments every 3 to 4 months – although there is individual variation with this.

For ULTRAcel Q+, the full result will take place over the following 6 months as new collagen is produced. However, effects wear off as your skin continues to age. Further treatments can help to slow down the natural ageing process.

  6. How is the treatment given?

Face slimming injections in Manchester are given by small syringes with fine needles. Several injection points are made into the skin overlying the target muscles.

For ULTRAcel Q+, you will feel small amounts of energy travelling down into the skin. This indicates that collagen-building process has started. Minimal discomfort may vary from person-to-person, but the sensation will only last as long as the energy is being delivered. No anaesthetic is required for an ULTRAcel Q+ treatment.

  7. What are the side effects of face slimming injections?

As the treatments have temporary effects, the side effects also tend to be temporary. Most commonly, there is some redness and swelling at the injection points immediately after treatment, which usually settle down after 1 hour. Bruising can occur and may take a few days or weeks to heal. There are usually no noticeable effects on regular chewing or talking.

  8. What should I avoid after face slimming injections?

Avoid touching the treated areas for at least 2 hours post-treatment to reduce the risk of infections. Avoid exposure to excessive heat such as the use of steam and sauna rooms, sunbeds and vigorous exercise for 24 to 48 hours post-treatment as these activities may potentially reduce the effectiveness of treatment.

*Individual results may vary.
