At Lumiere Clinic, our Consultant Dermatologist has a special interest in hair disorders and is able to diagnose and treat your hair loss or thinning problem with a range of medical treatments. In some cases, hair loss occurs due to a scalp skin condition in which case starting medical treatment early for the scalp skin condition is important to reduce further hair loss.
If the diagnosis is not clear from your clinical features, we offer a scalp skin biopsy where the specimen sent and examined by a dermatopathologist with experience in reviewing scalp biopsy specimens.
Once the diagnosis is established, we will go through treatment options with you including the pros and cons of each treatment options.
At Lumiere Clinic, we offer the following treatment:
Topical treatments – we can recommend you appropriate topical treatments to improve your hair growth and scalp condition. Some are prescriptive medications which we will provide a prescription at your consultation.
Oral treatments – these are usually prescriptive medications which our Dermatologist will initiate and monitor during the course of your treatment. We will discuss the available licensed as well as off-licensed (but clinically shown to be effective) treatments that are appropriate for your condition.
Platelet-rich-plasma (PRP) injections – this is an option for those who prefer natural methods without the use of medications. It essentially involves using your own plasma blood to provide nutrients and growth factors to your scalp to improve hair growth. This treatment will be discussed in depth at your consultation if it is deemed appropriate for your condition.
It is important to have your hair-loss condition examined appropriately by a specialist to start treatment early before the condition progresses and hair loss becomes irreversible. It is also important to determine whether your hair loss is a non-scarring or scarring type.
There are a range of causes for hair loss and hair thinning. The most common causes are:
Alopecia areata
This condition is characterised by patchy areas of hair loss with smooth bald areas on the scalp. The condition is common in childhood, but can also occur in adulthood. It is commonly triggered by a stressful event or a medical illness. It tends to run in people whose family members are also affected with a similar hair problem or an autoimmune disease.
Male pattern and female pattern hair loss
Male and female pattern hair loss are the most common reasons for hair thinning. In men (especially in people whose family members are also affected), it is common to see thinning on the top of the scalp with receding frontal hair lines. In women (especially after menopause), it is common to see thinning on the top of the scalp with widening of the central parting.

Telogen effluvium
Telogen effluvium is a hair-shedding condition where the hair is shed during the telogen phase. Acute shedding tends to follow a stressful event, whereas chronic shedding can occur due to a range of causes, sometimes due to underlying medical reasons.
Here are the treatments that we offer:
Scalp skin biopsy
A scalp skin biopsy is available to diagnose your hair loss condition accurately. At your consultation, this will be discussed if deemed appropriate.
Prescription treatments
These are medical prescriptions in the form of creams or tablets. It is important that you are monitored regularly by your dermatologist while you are treated with prescribed medical treatments for hair loss.
Platelet rich plasma (PRP)
Platelet rich plasma is suitable for certain types of hair loss (alopecia), to prevent it happening further and promote hair growth. Best results are usually combined with medical treatments. It is ideal to start treatment early at the first sign of hair loss and thinning. Results can be seen as early as 2 months, but typically between 5 to 8 months.
